FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
-
What do I need to bring?
For all water based activities all you will need is to have something that you can wear under a wetsuit eg swimwear, an old pair of runners or water shoes to wear on your feet in the water and a towel for afterwards.
For land based activities it will depend on the time of year, but generally wear warm, comfortable clothing (no denim). Sensible footwear for the activity: runners for rock climbing, hiking boots for hill walking. Always have a warm top and waterproofs, and any snacks/drinks you want.
-
Are changing facilities available?
Yes we have basic changing rooms available at the pier where we run the kayaking and paddle boarding sessions from. However there are no showers nor toilet facilities available. There are public toilet facilities available at the Maghery Community Centre: Ionad An Mháchaire
-
I can’t swim, can I still take part in the watersports?
Yes, being able to swim, while beneficial, is not a requirement. It’s more about having a bit of water confidence, that if you do end up in the water you can remain calm and follow simple instructions to help you get back on your kayak/paddleboard. All participants are required to wear a wetsuit and buoyancy aid, both of which keep you afloat.
-
What if the weather is bad, will the session still go ahead?
All our activities are very weather dependent, and we will never go out in conditions that are unsafe. We always keep a close eye on the forecast, and will endeavour to keep you informed ASAP if we need to cancel or reschedule a session. Rain doesn’t stop play, it’s more the wind that will cause sessions to be cancelled.
-
Where are the sessions run?
Both the kayaking and stand up paddle boarding sessions depart from the pier in Maghery, unless otherwise communicated: Maghery Pier
For the rock climbing the main location will be on Cruit Island
For all hiking trips the meeting location will be communicated to you as this will depend on the starting point of the hike.
For the adventure camps, the drop of and collection point is normally the Maghery Community Centre unless otherwise communicated: Ionad An Mháchaire
-
What age do children have to be to go kayaking/paddle boarding?
The minimum age is 6 years old to go kayaking, please note we do have double kayaks available if you want to be in the same kayak as your child. With paddleboarding it is generally better suited to slightly older children unless the conditions are perfectly calm. So the minimum age is 10 years old.
-
Can I organise my own booking?
Absolutely, as long as we have available instructors and the weather we will try to accommodate all private group bookings.
-
I want to book a large group, can you accommodate large numbers?
With enough advance notice we can definitely organise a large group booking, there are a range of activities that we can do, including team building challenges. We can also arrange for additional extras such as food, provided by the local community centre.

Had a great coastal sea kayaking experience with Chris from Maghery Coastal Adventures today. 3 of us and a group family of 5 also. Chris showed us all the safety requirements of kayaking and gave us a helmet and life jacket. We headed off touring the Maghery coast and saw jellyfish herons and mackerel jumping out of the sea! Chris was very informative and told us about the local flora and fauna and local history also. I would highly recommend this tour and had great fun and enjoyment doing it.

We had a guided kayaking session with Stephen on Tuesday the 6th July. It was absolutely brilliant. Stephen was fantastic with our smallies (12 & 10); there were challenges, races, gorgeous Donegal scenary, and even a curious seal watching us. A lovely way to spend a couple of hours. Thanks Stephen.

I’ve been going on holiday to the Maghery area all my life, and this is the first time I’ve been out on the water. My 2 kids and I really enjoyed the kayaking with Stephen. Was a great instructor who also made it fun along the way. I would definitely recommend it!

Myself and 3 others did Kayaking during our time in Donegal a few weeks back with the instructor Michael. The instructor was very knowledgeable of both the sport and the surroundings. He was really sound also which made the experience very enjoyable. Couldn’t recommend the company and the instructor any more. Thanks!
